Kindergarten Registration and Preschool Recruitment Dates Set

Hampshire County Schools will conduct kindergarten registration and preschool recruitment on the following dates:

Friday, January 20, 2012: For Romney Elementary, 304-822-3018, at the Hampshire County Board office from 8a.m.-11:00 a.m. & 12:00 noon –2:30 p.m.

Friday, February 3, 2012: At Capon Bridge Elementary, 304-856-3329, 8:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. & 12:00 noon – 2:30 p.m.

Friday, February 10, 2012: At John J. Cornwell Elementary, 304-492-5520, 8:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m.

Friday, February 10, 2012: At Augusta Elementary, 304-496-7001, 12:00 noon – 2:30 p.m.

Friday, February 17, 2012: At Springfield-Green Spring Elem., 304-822-4317, 8:00a.m.-11:00 a.m.

Friday, February 17, 2012: At Slanesville Elementary, 304-496-7069, 12:00 noon – 2:30 p.m.

Friday, February 24, 2012: Make-up day at Board office for all schools from 8:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m.

These registration dates are scheduled for children who will be attending kindergarten next fall and are not currently in preschool. Preschool recruitment will also take place at the same scheduled times and locations. All children are now required to attend kindergarten before entry into first grade. All children must begin school if they are six (6) years old prior to September 1, 2012 and should register at the school in which they attend kindergarten.

Children do not need to come to registration or recruitment. Please note that children currently attending preschool in Hampshire County will not need to register for kindergarten as it will automatically be done at the school.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible to enter kindergarten classes, a child must be five (5) years old before September 1, 2012. No child can be registered without (1.) a birth certificate; (2.) immunization card or some other written from signed by a physician or the county health nurse, certifying that the child has been successfully immunized for the following diseases: diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, polio, measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) and varicella.

All children entering kindergarten for the first time must have two (2) MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) shots, three (3) Hepatitis B shots and two (2) varicella shots, four (4) DTap shots, three (3) IPV shots prior to attending school. Immunizations can be obtained at the Hampshire County Health Department in Augusta.

Tine Test

Kindergarten and first-grade students who have been residents of West Virginia are no longer required to have a tine test prior to school entrance. All new students entering preschool-12 who move to West Virginia will still need to have a TB test before entering school unless they have had one within four (4) months of the school entrance date and have documentation that the results were negative.

Preschool Recruitment

Recruitment is planned to enroll children into EACHS Head Start or Hampshire County Pre School programs.

EACHS Head Start offers a preschool program for three (3) year old children and four (4) year old children. Children must be three (3) years old prior to September 1, 2012 or four (4) years old prior to September 1, 2012.

Hampshire County Preschool program serves children who are four (4) years old prior to September 1, 2012.

Some three (3) year olds are placed in the Hampshire County Preschool classrooms if they have been identified with delays in two (2) areas. For more information please call Hampshire County schools Special Education Office at 304-822-3528 ext. 190.

You will need to bring the following items to registration: original birth certificate, proof of residency, up to date immunization record, child’s social security card and proof of income. Applications are scored using a needs-based criteria and scores will determine placement.
