Lovin’ the numbers at Math Field Day

AUGUSTA — Approximately 130 Hampshire County students participated in Math Field Day Thursday and Friday at Augusta Church of Christ, including Romney Middle School sixth-grader Wyatt Timbrook (pictured).

Students in grades four through eight competed in four categories — estimation, mental math, computation and a written examination. Each Hampshire County school was permitted to send about 10 percent of each grade level to the event.

In the estimation room, Timbrook had a series of 30-second intervals in which to estimate a variety of measurements, including the area that could be covered by a table cloth in square feet, the volume of a container of juice in milliliters, the weight of a cookbook in pounds and the volume of a cake mix box in cubic inches.

Students in grades four and five took their turn on Thursday. On Friday, 72 students from Capon Bridge and Romney middle schools competed for the right to represent Hampshire County in the RESA 8 regional math competition.  Three students per grade level are selected to advance to the regional contest.

Locally, the event is coordinated by Rowanne Shockey, math teacher at Hampshire High School. Members of the high school’s math team helped grade the students’ work on both days of the competition.
